Quite a Journey – 100 Years with Superior

By Lynne Henson – President of Superior Abrasives

It is the early 1970s. The Watergate scandal keeps the U.S. on edge, the Apollo 17 program brings the last humans to walk on the moon back to earth, the Expo is held in Spokane, Washington and Muhammed Ali beats George Foreman in the legendary boxing match in Kinshasa, Zaire, that has gone down in history as the „Rumble in the Jungle“.

During this time, Delma Overman (1971) and Judy Burke (1974) decide to hire on at a small company called Superior Rotary Tools. Delma starts as a part-time employee since she is still in high school. After finishing school, she finally joins the company as a full-time employee. Her sister Judy, the youngest of eleven siblings, will follow her to Superior in May 1974.

Judy had already worked there during summers in high school. In between, she worked for a drug store for a short time, but then followed the path of many of her family members to Superior.

Today, Delma and Judy are still employed by the company, which is now called Superior Abrasives and has 88 employees. And now they are putting their plan to retire into action. March 3rd is the date for Delma after 51 years and May 26th for Judy after 49 years. The two say they feel very fortunate to have been part of this company. They have seen so many people come and go, made many friends and learned something from everyone, they say.

The acquisition by PFERD in 2012 did not change a lot, they say. But at first, they were surprised and partly shocked about the takeover as they did not expect it coming. Moving into the unique new building was the biggest change within the new governance structure, they recount, but this change was definitely a benefit they proudly say looking at the big red “S”.

Delma was a teacher, a counselor, a disciplinarian and a friend to most of us. Always patient, but firm. Someone who treated Superior like their own.

Judy has been a rock star working as a liaison between customer service, manufacturing and shipping. Her years of experience and tribal knowledge will be hard to replace.

I personally think the world of you and will miss you dearly. It has been me a real honor to work beside Delma and Judy for the past 25 years. I feel blessed for the time with them and am very excited for them.

Delma and her hubby Rick want to do some traveling and fun together. Judy does not have much planned yet but she is looking forward to just relax, enjoy a nicely brewed cup of coffee and eventually work in her yard. This is much deserved after working at superior for 100 years! Delma and Judy, we love you and you will always be a part of our family!

Acquisitions of Achievement

Superior Abrasives, LLC. has seen many milestones since the origination of Superior Rotary Tools in the 1960’s. Product and facility expansions, additional equipment and capabilities – all were done to grow as an industry resource.

Ten years ago, in 2012, Superior Abrasives was acquired by the Rüggeberg Group, parent company of PFERD Inc. Support from the Rüggeberg Group and our association with PFERD have provided us with additional resources in technology, product development and increased efficiencies that have translated to even greater value to our customers. Since the acquisition, we have become a part of a major international company that has such a long and successful history, and the desire to grow Superior has always been evident.

Only three years after acquisition, a ground breaking ceremony was held for our new, 100,000 square foot facility – over three times larger than the existing Superior Abrasives facility. Since the new facility was opened in 2016, production growth occurred quickly – mounted flap wheel cutting and gluing operations, automated belt production, full-width die cutting and unmounted flap wheel operations, among many other improvements.

There have been many changes in the last ten years, but our history goes much further than that.

In the early 2010’s, the Cook family, founders of Superior Abrasives, were ready to retire. Paul and Jean Cook were adamant in finding another owner that would care for the company as they did since 1962. After months of searching, the perfect suiters were found in the Rüggeberg Group. On November 1st, 2012, Paul and Jean Cook, alongside current President, Lynne Henson, introduced the new owners of Superior Abrasives, LLC. Mr. Jörn Bielenberg and Cristel Ruggeberg congratulated the Cooks on their newfound retirement and promised the employees of Superior that they would remain independent of PFERD, upholding the structure that Superior had built through their own team.

The entire team of Superior is continually grateful for the opportunities the Rüggeberg Group have presented. Happy anniversary, and here’s to many more.

ALPHA-KUT

New ALPHA-KUT™ Quickly Remove Slag, Burrs and More from Castings and Heavy Weldments

(Vandalia, OH) Superior Abrasives, LLC introduces their most aggressive coated material in quick change form, ALPHA-KUT™ Quick Change Discs.  Burrs, sharp edges, slag and other undesirable materials can be quickly removed, and the workpiece shaped in a single step, thereby reducing changeover time and costs.  ALPHA-KUT™ consists of triangular, precision-formed abrasive grains that exhibit the continually self-sharpening properties and wear characteristics of ceramics, delivering a consistent cutting action over a long service life.  The grain strength is complemented by a rigid fiber backing for stability, allowing added pressure for maximum stock removal.  ALPHA-KUT™ quick change discs are ideal for heavy material removal or hardened materials, such as castings where the sprue is removed, large parts with excessive parting lines, large weld removal in narrow or otherwise inaccessible areas, weld or seam removal and blending, leveling and rough shaping, and more.  Foundries and fabricators working with cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel can save time on tooling changeovers and achieve faster processing with this aggressive new product.

While ALPHA-KUT™ can complement existing coated abrasives, it may be a suitable replacement for small diameter or light use cutting wheels.  The relatively forgiving nature of coated abrasives allows new and inexperienced operators to perform tasks without much risk to expensive workpieces.  Available in 36 grit, 1 ½”, 2” and 3” diameters with military-grade nylon type R button attachments.

Superior Abrasives, LLC. is a leading manufacturer of abrasive tools for surface finishing applications.  They manufacture a full lineup of products including quick change discs, flap wheels, PSA products, belts, shop rolls, cartridge rolls, and more, from their 100,000 square foot factory. Surface Conditioning Belts

SHUR-BRITE™ Surface Conditioning Belts Ensure Consistent Quality – Ideal for Large Surface Treatment

(Vandalia, OH) Superior Abrasives, LLC introduces SHUR-BRITE™ Surface Conditioning Belts which feature an open structure to resist overheating, part discoloration, or loading, to ensure consistent quality over the belt life, making it ideal for treating large surface areas.   With repeatable finishes, SHUR-BRITE™ belts are ideal for large scale robotic applications.  Users can create linear scratch patters on stainless steel food equipment, and blend or re-orient scratch patterns after repairs.    High edge durability and flexibility without chunking, and smear-free removal of oxidation, paint or adhesives make them ideal for many manufacturing and re-manufacturing environments.  Ideal for a wide variety of materials including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, exotic alloys, plastics, and composites.

In narrow or short form, like file belts, the surface conditioning material is manufactured with additional flex, easily conforming to small contact wheels and narrow areas of the workpiece.  They are ideal for airfile belt sanders, portable belt sanders, and benchstand belt sanders.

Wide belts utilize a low stretch reinforcement, providing stability and reduced changeover on large, robotic equipment.  Reduced stretching and high edge retention ensures durability and consistent performance throughout use.  They generate lower heat which provides longer service life.

A variety of SHUR-KUT Coated Belt materials are also available for more aggressive removal, shaping or finishing of handheld or stationary workpieces.

SHUR-KUT Cartridge Rolls

Introducing SHUR-KUT™ Coated Cartridge Rolls for Shaping, Porting, Finishing or Polishing Hard to Reach Areas

(Vandalia, OH) Superior Abrasives, LLC introduces SHUR-KUT™ Coated Cartridge Rolls which feature a specially wrapped design which produces new layers for fresh cutting action throughout life as the surface layers are worn away.  They are ideal for shaping, porting, finishing, or polishing hard to reach areas.  Cotton cloth acts as a cushion for polishing finer grits.  Many diameters are available to match or enlarge existing contours, while straight or tapered designs are also available for through holes or inside corner grinding. Available with industry-leading lead times, with many items shipping from stock.  Ideal for a wide variety of materials including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, exotic alloys, plastics, and composites.

Ceramic cartridge rolls feature self-sharpening grains which continually produce fresh cutting points which easily cut through stainless and alloys.  Self-sharpening grains also reduce friction and prolong cut rates.  Additional grinding aid further reduces heat for extended wear and reduced downtime.  Multiple layers wear away to expose fresh abrasive material, further extending service life.

Aluminum Oxide straight cartridge rolls feature a generalpurpose cutting action which wears evenly and uniformly, producing a consistent cut on ferrous and non-ferrous metals.  Ideal for use in straight holes or cylinders or around contoured parts, they remove or shape arts quickly, deburr stamped parts, and allow access to intricate areas or small holes.  A tapered design is also available to provide more access and pointed control in concave areas or inside corners. They allow users to grind and follow acute seams and welds. Ideal for removing or smoothing inside corner welds, porting and shaping concave areas, and navigating intricate cast parts.

SHUR-KUT™ Cartridge Rolls are available in a variety of useful sizes, from 3/16” to 1” diameter, up to 2” length, multiple pilot hole diameters and a full range of grits from 36 to 320.

Artful Appearance

In planning the new Superior Abrasives facility, great consideration was placed into the progressive architecture to represent growth, style and the modern phase of operations. To complement the architecture, interior designer Sabina Pequinot suggested the artwork of Mike Elsass. Elsass’ work focuses on beautifying rusted and tarnished metal through layers and layers of paint and other media. Superior found a connection with their own product processes – finishing and polishing rough or imperfect workpieces. Upon discussions with Elsass, he was thrilled to see all the grains and textures that were part of the abrasive raw materials and asked to incorporate them into his art pieces. Elsass was pleased with the modern architecture of the facility and was extremely excited to complement his work. In exchange for the art, future clients are able to visit Superior and view his work in such a setting.

Most of the art featured in the facility was custom made, including a salvaged airplane wing hosted in the entrance hallway. The wing was inspired by the close proximity to the Dayton International Airport and the region’s strong heritage in flight.

Elsass hosted an event with Superior management, in which each individual created their own piece using the same techniques that make Elsass’ art so unique. The individual pieces are displayed in the facility and treated as a signature of all who helped create the new home of Superior Abrasives.
